Manitoba’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre says most rivers in the province face a low to moderate risk of spring flooding, with a higher threat in parts of the Interlake region.
The Fisher River basin is expected to see a moderate to major flood risk, while moderate risk levels are also in place for the Red, Assiniboine and Souris rivers, along with the Icelandic River and parts of the Saskatchewan River in northern Manitoba.
Officials say flood potential will depend heavily on upcoming weather conditions, including snowfall, rainfall and how quickly temperatures rise during the spring melt.
Elsewhere, flood risk is considered low for many areas, including eastern Manitoba, the Winnipeg River basin and most lakes across the province. Lake levels, including Lake Winnipeg and Lake Manitoba, are currently below normal for this time of year.
Major flood control infrastructure, including the Red River Floodway and Portage Diversion, is not expected to be used under normal conditions but could be activated if weather worsens.
Ice-cutting efforts have already been completed on some rivers to reduce the risk of ice-jam flooding.
