A four-year-old boy is in stable condition after falling into a creek near his home southeast of Winkler on Monday afternoon.

Manitoba RCMP say the incident happened around 4:55 p.m., when the child and his older brother wandered from their yard toward a nearby creek. The younger boy was playing on ice and snow along the edge when it broke, causing him to fall into the fast-moving water.

His older brother alerted their mother, who rushed to the scene. After initially losing sight of the child, she crossed the road and found him further downstream, where he had been carried through a culvert.

Despite not knowing how to swim, the mother entered the creek and, with help from a neighbour, pulled the boy to shore. She then performed CPR and was able to revive him while another neighbour called 911.

The child was treated by paramedics at the scene before being airlifted to a Winnipeg hospital. He was reported to be alert and in stable condition.

RCMP are reminding Manitobans to stay clear of waterways during spring melt, as unstable ice, high water levels and fast currents can increase the risk of serious accidents.
