Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew highlighted a series of health care and community investments for the Selkirk area on Friday.
Speaking at the Selkirk BIZ State of the Region address at Gaffer’s Restaurant and Lounge in Lockport, Kinew said the province plans to add 200 more hip and knee surgeries across the province this year.
“Families in Selkirk can access better health care close to home,” said Kinew. “More surgeries, new midwifery services and fewer vacancies in home care mean people are getting the care they need in their own community, without long waits or travel.”
At Selkirk Regional Health Centre, 800 hip and knee procedures were completed last year, with another 800 expected this year.
Midwifery services came to the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority for the first time in November 2025, with Selkirk established as the regional centre. Two full-time midwives are now supporting 73 families, with births at Selkirk Regional Health Centre and outreach clinics already underway at Lake Manitoba First Nation.
On the infrastructure side, the province touted its investments of more than $12 million in roadwork across the RMs of St. Clements and St. Andrews over the past three years.
Additional Selkirk investments include $600,000 for the Gaynor Family Regional Library expansion, $200,000 for municipal building security, $100,000 for upgrades to the Gordon Howard Seniors Centre, and $59,000 for HVAC upgrades at Betel Personal Care Home.
