The city says they have received an additional $4 million from the feds for housing and will increase its target by 150 units to meet its goal.
The overall target for housing is now 14,251 new homes built in Winnipeg by December. The additional money comes from the federal government’s Housing Accelerator Fund.
“We had reported 9,716 new permitted housing units at our two-year reporting deadline on December 4, 2025. This included 1,046 affordable units. The two-year target for housing units was 8,521, showing we had achieved 114 per cent of our two-year target,” reads a statement from the city.
Increasing the target was a condition of receiving the money, said Mayor Scott Gillingham.
“This performance bonus is a direct result of our commitment to change how we build in Winnipeg,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “This additional $4 million allows us to further accelerate our efforts to ensure every Winnipegger has a place to call home.”
The additional funds are in addition to $30.6 million in annual funding from CMHC. This installment is the third of four payments that make up the original $122.4 million agreement, said the city.
City council will consider how to spend the money at upcoming council meetings.
