The Manitoba government is putting $2.2 million toward community safety programs in Winnipeg’s downtown and surrounding neighbourhoods this summer.
The funding will be distributed across five organizations: $750,000 each to the Downtown Community Safety Partnership (DCSP) and the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ, $300,000 to the West End BIZ, $250,000 to the Exchange District BIZ, and $150,000 to the West Broadway BIZ.
The money will support community partnerships focused on de-escalation and wellness, and can also be used for security upgrades, including cameras, alarm systems, anti-graffiti coatings, security fencing, and repairs to vandalism or property damage.
A centrepiece of the investment is the Community Safety WAYFINDERS program, a partnership between the DCSP and Indigenous-led community outreach teams. The program will receive $500,000 in provincial funding through the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ, plus an additional $100,000 from the city and $50,000 from the BIZ itself.
“A thriving downtown depends on people feeling safe, connected and confident being here,” said Kate Fenske, CEO, Downtown Winnipeg BIZ. “I truly believe today’s investment will make a meaningful difference.”
