Winnipeg police are bringing back an enhanced transit safety operation this weekend following the success of a similar initiative last fall.
The Winnipeg Police Service launched a targeted transit safety strategy in September 2025 in response to a surge in violent crime across the city’s transit network. In 2024, 325 violent crimes were reported at Winnipeg Transit locations.
The fall operation ran through the end of 2025 and resulted in an 18 percent drop in transit-related violent crime compared to the same period the year prior, according to police.
Beginning this weekend, WPS will again deploy an increased police presence across Winnipeg Transit routes, stops, and hubs. Riders can expect to see both uniformed and plainclothes officers riding buses and patrolling near shelters and stations. Members of the newly formed Rapid Response Unit will also be among those deployed.
“Violent and disruptive conduct will not be tolerated,” police said in a release. “This initiative is rooted in prevention and protection, aiming to foster a transit system that is welcoming, reliable, and secure for all Winnipeggers.”
