A 19-year-old Winnipeg man faces $2,800 in fines and a seven-day motorcycle impoundment after a dangerous high-speed chase on Highway 59 in the RM of East St. Paul.

Manitoba RCMP say an officer spotted the motorcycle just before noon on May 24 travelling northbound without a displayed licence plate and attempted a traffic stop. The rider fled, weaving through traffic at 176 km/h in a posted 100 km/h zone.

Near the Birds Hill Provincial Park exit, the rider drove into the ditch, crossed into the southbound lane, and continued south on Highway 59, again weaving through traffic.

Officers from the Selkirk and Red River North detachments were called in and blocked the intersection of Highway 59 and Birds Hill Road. With no escape route, the driver stopped and was arrested without incident.

His licence was suspended and the motorcycle impounded for seven days for street racing. He was also issued a serious offence notice and five tickets covering speeding, careless driving, operating an unregistered vehicle, driving without insurance, and failing to display valid registration.

Red River North RCMP continues to investigate.
