Winnipeg firefighters responded to two separate residential fires Tuesday evening, with one person critically injured.
The first fire broke out at 6:32 p.m. in a three-storey apartment building in the 100 block of River Avenue. Crews arrived to find smoke and flames coming from the building, but brought the fire under control shortly after 7 p.m.
Crews located one person inside the suite where the fire started and removed them from the building. Paramedics transported the individual to hospital in critical condition. Seven other occupants were assessed on scene but didn’t require hospital transport.
The fire remains under investigation.
Less than 90 minutes later, at 7:50 p.m., Winnipeg fire crews were called to a blaze in a high-rise apartment building in the 400 block of Elgin Avenue. Firefighters located the fire in a suite and declared it under control at 8:15 p.m. Some residents self-evacuated while others sheltered in place. No injuries were reported.
The Elgin Avenue fire also remains under investigation. Damage estimates for both fires weren’t immediately available.
