The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a gas leak and a structure fire on Sunday.

Crews were called to the 400 block of Langside Street at 8:13 p.m. after reports of a natural gas smell at a vacant residence. Firefighters detected elevated gas levels inside the home upon arrival.

Several neighbouring homes were evacuated as a precaution and the surrounding area was closed to traffic while Manitoba Hydro crews located and repaired the leak. Residents were allowed to return home and the road reopened once gas levels were back to safe levels.

No injuries were reported.

Earlier that day, WFPS crews responded to a fire in a single-family bungalow in the 100 block of Adsum Drive at around 8:30 a.m. Firefighters arriving on scene found smoke coming from the home and got the fire under control by 8:53 a.m.

The occupants had already evacuated safely before crews arrived. Paramedics assessed one person at the scene who didn’t require transport to hospital. No other injuries were reported.
Firefighters also rescued a cat from the home.

The fire remains under investigation, and damage estimates are not yet available.
