Winnipeg firefighters responded to two structure blazes early Friday, including one where an individual had to be rescued.
Crews were called to a monitored fire alarm at an eight-storey high-rise apartment building on Hendon Avenue just before 5 a.m. Firefighters found a fire in one suite and launched an interior attack, bringing the fire under control by 5:28 a.m.
One person was rescued from the suite where the fire started. Paramedics treated the individual at the scene before taking them to hospital in unstable condition. No other injuries were reported.
Some residents evacuated on their own, while others sheltered in place. Fire damage was largely contained to the affected suite, and all other residents were able to return home once the fire was extinguished.
The cause remains under investigation.
In a separate incident at around 2:22 a.m., crews were called to a single-storey commercial building in the 700 block of Dufferin Avenue to find smoke coming from the building. The fire was deemed under control by around 3:44 a.m.
No occupants were found inside, and no injuries were reported. Damage estimates aren’t yet available, and the cause remains under investigation.
