Manitoba pharmacists can now prescribe and administer eligible birth control, the province announced Friday.

Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara said making birth control free was an important first step, but Manitobans had indicated that access to a prescription could still be improved.

“By allowing pharmacists to assess for and prescribe eligible birth control, we’re making it easier for people to get the care they need, when and where they need it,” said Asagwara. “It’s another step forward in improving access to reproductive health care across Manitoba.”

Pharmacists must complete approved training before providing contraceptive assessments and prescriptions. Those who have completed the training can now assess for and prescribe eligible prescription contraceptives, including oral contraceptive pills, hormonal patches, vaginal rings and intramuscular contraceptive injections.

Eligible Manitobans with a valid Manitoba Health card can receive up to three pharmacist-provided contraceptive assessments and up to four pharmacist-administered contraceptive injections each benefit year at no cost. Manitobans are encouraged to contact their local pharmacy to confirm service availability.
