A 31-year-old man is facing charges after a woman died in an ATV collision on Little Saskatchewan First Nation — one of two ATV incidents RCMP responded to this week.
Gypsumville RCMP responded to a report of an injured ATV passenger at approximately 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Investigators learned a 20-year-old woman was riding as a passenger on an ATV driven by a 31-year-old man when she fell off the vehicle and hit the gravel road. She wasn’t wearing a helmet, and efforts to revive her were unsuccessful.
The driver, also from Little Saskatchewan First Nation, was arrested. Mason Campbell, 31, is charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and impaired driving causing death. He remains in custody.
A second collision occurred later that night in Brochet, when Thompson Rural RCMP were notified at approximately 10:10 p.m. of a crash involving two youths and an ATV.
Police learned a 14-year-old boy was already at the nursing station being treated for serious injuries. A 13-year-old boy from South Indian Lake had been driving an ATV on the street without headlights when he struck the other teen. The injured youth was transported to hospital in Winnipeg for further treatment and has since been released.
RCMP continue to investigate the Brochet collision.
“Manitoba RCMP is reminding everyone to stay safe when riding in ATVs and off-road vehicles (ORV),” Mounties said in a release. “To date, six people have died this year in collisions involving ATVs and ORVs. Injuries that require hospitalization have also been a frequent occurrence.”
