Winnipeg Economic Development & Tourism has appointed Chuck Davidson as its new president and CEO, effective September 8.

Davidson spent more than a decade as president and CEO of the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce, where he led province-wide economic development initiatives including Manitoba’s Look North process, the Rural Manitoba Economic Development Corporation, and the premier’s business and jobs sub-committee on trade. He also co-chaired development of Travel Manitoba’s provincial tourism strategy.

The appointment comes as the organization has been tasked by the city and province to lead the creation of a new province-wide economic development agency — alongside its ongoing mandate to grow Winnipeg’s economy and tourism sector.

The proposed agency would unite provincial, municipal, regional, Indigenous and private-sector partners under a single-window approach for businesses and investors. Its structure and governance have not yet been finalized.

“There is a tremendous opportunity ahead to build on the organization’s strong foundation and bring people together around a more coordinated approach to economic development and tourism,” said Davidson in a release.

“I look forward to working with the talented team at Winnipeg Economic Development & Tourism and our partners to create opportunities for businesses and communities to grow and prosper in Winnipeg and across Manitoba.”

Winnipeg Economic Development & Tourism will remain a non-profit governed by a private-sector-led board, with Amanda Macdonald continuing as chief operatingofficer through the transition.
