Dollarama, 2727 Portage Avenue (GOOGLE STREET VIEW)
Winnipeg police have arrested a suspect in connection with the robbery and stabbing of a security guard at a Dollarama in St. James.
Police say an off-duty officer spotted the suspect on Wednesday near Portage Avenue and Sharp Boulevard and alerted on-duty members. Responding officers took the suspect into custody at Portage Avenue and Strathmillan Road without incident.
Nelson Preston Sumner, 29, is charged with aggravated assault, robbery and failing to comply with a probation order. He remains in custody.
As previously reported, police responded to the store in the 2700 block of Portage Avenue at around 4 p.m. on Tuesday after a 22-year-old male security guard was stabbed during a confrontation over suspected shoplifting. The guard suffered a serious upper-body injury and was taken to hospital in unstable condition, later upgraded to stable. The suspect fled with stolen merchandise before officers arrived.
