A 46-year-old man has been charged with arson after allegedly setting a fire at a multi-suite residence on College Avenue over the weekend.

Winnipeg police responded to the home in the 300 block of College Avenue just before 7:30 p.m. on September 5 for a report of a fire.

Police said the suspect, a tenant in the building, set the fire before retreating to his suite and refusing to comply with officers. A use-of-force encounter took place before he was taken into custody without incident. No other tenants were injured.

James Andrew Laferriere has been charged with four counts of arson with disregard for human life. He remains in custody.
