Manitobans donated the most to charities last year, according to figures released by Statistics Canada Monday.
Collected from income tax data, Canadian taxfilers contributed just under $8.3 billion to charity in 2010 — up 6.5% from 2009.
Manitoba (26.3%) had the highest percentage of taxfilers claiming charitable donations, followed by Prince Edward Island (25.3%) and Saskatchewan (25.3%). Nationally, 23.4% of Canadians, or 5.7 million people, claimed donations on their tax return — an increase of 2.2%.
The median donation amount was $260.
