A biopic looking at the life of late NDP leader Jack Layton will soon begin shooting in Winnipeg.

Locally-based Eagle Vision is producing the movie and will start production in and around the city in August.

The aboriginal-owned company has previously produced “Walk All Over Me,” “Blue State” and “Capote.”

“Smilin’ Jack: The Jack Layton Story” will air on the CBC. The network has also commissioned a second biopic titled, “Mr. Hockey: The Gordie Howe Story.”

Layton passed away last August after battling cancer.
