Stigma of Alzheimer’s Disease Remains Prevalent

August 31, 2012 7:50 AM | News

With September 1 just around the corner, the month will mark the first World Alzheimer’s Month.

The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba will be raising awareness of the disease during the next 30 days. The theme? Dementia: Living Together.

“Given the number of people who know someone with this disease, it is amazing that there is still a stigma attached,” said Sylvia Rothney, CEO of the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba. “Change will only come through a greater awareness and understanding of dementia and an international approach to promoting awareness.”

Alzheimer societies across the world will focus their activities on reducing the stigma associated with dementia and making communities more dementia-friendly by offering a range of programs and events.

More information on World Alzheimer’s Month is available at alzheimer.mb.ca.
