Red River Ex

The Red River Ex runs June 14-23. (HANDOUT)

The smell of mini donuts and cotton candy will permeate the air on the western edge of Winnipeg today as the Red River Ex opens for another season.

Helping to keep things fresh, the Ex has plenty of new attractions this year, including the Continental Stock Dog Championship — the first-ever competition where stock dogs coral three sheep in under four minutes for the chance to win a $10,000 grand prize.

Canada rapper Classified will perform Thursday, June 20, but there’s plenty of acts to keep fair-goers entertained until then, including Jason Blaine with guests Small Town Pistols, Faber Drive, Trooper, Glass Tiger, Econoline Crush, and Alan Doyle.

George Canyon with guests Keith and Renée will perform on June 21, while Colin James, and Toopy and Binoo take the stage next Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Three free admission times will also be in effect this year: Sunday, June 16 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Thursday, June 20 from noon to 3 p.m. and Sunday, June 23 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Advance gate tickets are available at Sobeys, Mac’s or RedRiverEx.com for $9.

This year’s Ex runs until June 23.
