Valentine’s Day is a special time for many, but for some women, it can mean spending February 14 alone and without celebration.
Two Winnipeg women are changing that feeling by throwing “Galentine’s Day” for those at the North End Women’s Centre (NEWC).
“Galentine’s Day is about women helping women, and doing something special for people who might not have much to celebrate on February 14th,” said Sara Smith, one of the event’s organizers.
“By giving little luxuries beyond the basics that women’s centres typically receive, we hope to make the recipients feel special and loved.”
The event was created two years ago by Smith and friend Laina Hughes, who raised money for chocolates, snacks, and feel-good movies for women living in centres.
The day has since expanded to a committee who are planning a full day celebrations at the NEWC.
“Last year, strangers throughout our city came together and openly gave of themselves so that women living with trauma would be lifted up on what had generally been one of the loneliest days of the year,” said Lisa Lacroix, executive director of the NEWC. “Valentine’s/Galentine’s Day became pleasurable again.”
Donations to Galentine’s Day can be made through the group’s GoFundMe Page. For a minimum $14 donation, donors will receive a Galentine’s Day enamel pin. Proceeds go towards candy, gifts, a delicious lunch, and sturdy reusable tote bags that will be given out at the event.
