Two people are in police custody following a break-and-enter spree that targeted more than two dozen downtown Winnipeg businesses.
Police say the duo broke into various small businesses, such as corner grocery stores and clothing storefronts, where they made off with cash registers and contents, cigarettes, lottery tickets and clothing over the last two months.
The latest robbery happened on Saturday morning at a food store in the 800 block of Portage Avenue. Property damage occurred and items were stolen from the business. Police and the canine unit tracked the suspects down in the 600 block of Broadway.
The combined estimated value of stolen merchandise is $40,000. Property damage is pegged at $17,500.
Michelle Jazzalyn Bird, 37, and Cornell Lee Belanger, 35, have been charged with 26 counts of break and enter, and 28 counts of possession of break-in instruments.
The pair remains in custody.
