Stony Mountain Institution’s medium and maximum security units went into lockdown on Monday so staff could conduct a general search.

The search of the jail just north of Winnipeg was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff and inmates.

In a statement, Correctional Services of Canada says normal operations will resume as soon as it is considered safe to do so.

Visits have been suspended until the search is completed.
