Valentine’s Day, or should we say “Galentine’s Day,” will be a special day for more than 300 women from Winnipeg’s North End on Thursday.
The fifth annual event celebrates women who access centres, such as the North End Women’s Centre (NEWC), with free beauty treatments, sweet treats, and a healthy lunch.
The event has proven to be so successful, Ottawa has hopped on board to throw their own Galentine’s Day to raise money for women’s centres in their community.
“The fact that this idea has resonated in Ottawa speaks to the universal need for community connection and caring,” said Sara Smith, one of the organizers behind Galentine’s Day.
“Valentine’s Day can be unpleasant even for the most privileged among us, who have easy access to not only the basic necessities, but even a few luxuries. Imagine how much more difficult it can feel for women experiencing homelessness or living with trauma.”
Organizers are still seeking donations, which can be made through the event’s GoFundMe page. Proceeds will go towards candy, gifts, a delicious lunch, and sturdy reusable tote bags filled with goodies that will be given out at the event.
