Police Watchdog Investigating Suspect’s Death While in Custody

Winnipeg Police Logo CrestWINNIPEG — An investigation is underway after a man was found unresponsive and later died while in police custody.

Officers were responding to a report of an assault and disturbance at a home in the North Point Douglas area on April 16.

Police found an injured man in his 50s on scene, who was taken to hospital in stable condition.

A 56-year-old male suspect was later arrested near Main Street and Sutherland Avenue. While at the North District police station for processing, police say he was found to be unresponsive in a holding room.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is now looking into the incident as the death occurred in a police facility.
