If straws are on your shopping list the next time you visit IKEA, you’re out of luck.
The Swedish furniture giant has phased out all single-use plastic straws from its Canadian stores ahead of schedule.
“Plastic straws have become an important symbol in the global movement to drastically reduce plastic pollution in our oceans and waterways,” said Melissa Mirowski, sustainability specialist with IKEA Canada, in a release.
“Together with our co-workers and customers, we are proud to take this significant step to contribute to a world without waste.”
The retailer set a goal of January 1, 2020 to phase out its last plastic straw, but hit its target nine months in advance.
IKEA is looking to introduce more sustainable alternatives, including new, biodegradable paper straws in both its product range and restaurants.
