Manitoba Lt.-Gov. Janice Filmon underwent surgery for breast cancer on Monday.

Her office says in a statement that Filmon will be unable to perform her duties as lieutenant-governor for a period of time. She is resting comfortably post-surgery, a brief statement said.

“During the lieutenant-governor’s absence, the administrator of the Government of Manitoba possesses the full constitutional powers to execute the office and functions of the lieutenant-governor. By order of the Governor-General in Council, the Chief Justice of Manitoba and other judges of the courts of Manitoba, in order of seniority, are empowered to act as administrator as needed.”

The Filmon family is asking for privacy during this time. More information will be provided at a later date.
