WINNIPEG — As the new school year kicks off, CAA Manitoba is urging motorists to exercise caution, especially in school zones, to ensure the safety of children travelling to and from school.
“Parents and guardians across Manitoba have reported seeing unsafe driving behaviours in school zones, including double parking, speeding and stopping in moving traffic,” said Ewald Friesen, manager, government & community relations for CAA Manitoba.
“Not only are these behaviours dangerous, they also could come with stiff penalties.”
Passing a stopped school bus with flashing lights and an extended stop arm is a major concern highlighted by the automobile association.
“It’s illegal and puts young lives at risk,” Friesen added, noting that offenders face fines of $674 and two demerit points if convicted.
CAA Manitoba offers several safety tips, including reducing traffic by encouraging walking or biking to school, eliminating distractions while driving, adhering to speed limits, and choosing safe drop-off and pick-up locations. Drivers are also reminded to stop for school buses and to be vigilant for safety patrollers.
