Winnipeg police say a woman has died after she was struck by a police vehicle near a homeless encampment on Monday.
Police were driving in Fort Rouge Park at around 9:30 p.m. returning an individual to the encampment along the river bank.
While operating their cruiser in the area, a collision occurred with a woman in her 30s. Officers provided emergency medical care to the victim. She was transported to hospital in critical condition and succumbed to her injuries.
Acting police Chief Art Stannard offered his condolences to her family, friends and the larger community.
“I know this is a very heartbreaking, emotional, difficult time for the family. They are looking for answers. They want to know what happened,” Stannard told a press conference Tuesday.
The officers are “devastated” and are on leave for a few days, said Stannard.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) was notified and assumed responsibility for the investigation.
Witnesses or anyone who may have information or video footage are asked to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
