The City of Winnipeg celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Charleswood Bridge on Friday, highlighting the successful public-private partnership (P3) that brought the $45.8-million project to life.

The bridge, connecting Charleswood and St. James, was one of Canada’s first P3 infrastructure projects and was completed a year ahead of schedule in 1995.

“Finished a full year ahead of schedule, this project not only connected neighborhoods [sic] but also set the stage for future partnerships in Winnipeg and beyond,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “With the upcoming handover to the City, we’re proud to carry its legacy forward as a model of smart infrastructure that benefits our community.”

The city made its final payment on the project in 2024, and full ownership of the bridge will transfer to the city in 2025. Minor rehabilitation work on the bridge will be completed over the next eight months, after which all interpretive signage and decorations will be returned to the bridge.
