WINNIPEG — The provincial and federal governments are jointly funding $38.4 million to support the creation of hundreds of blue-collar jobs at NFI Group Inc.’s new All-Canadian Build facility in Winnipeg.
The initiative is a collaboration between the Manitoba government, NFI Group, and PrairiesCan’s Business Scale-up and Productivity program.
“This project is about putting a ‘Made in Canada’ stamp on the low-carbon economy,” said Premier Wab Kinew on Friday. “Here in Manitoba, blue-collar workers are part of the transition to a net zero future and it’s companies like NFI that are leading the charge.”
The investment will create 250 direct jobs in Winnipeg and hundreds more indirect jobs, the province said in a release. The facility will expand production capacity and have the ability to manufacture, finish and service zero-emissions heavy-duty transit buses for the Canadian market.
The province will invest $23.4 million towards the project, with the federal government kicking in $15 million.
Construction is expected to start in 2024, with the facility set to be complete by the end of 2025.
