WINNIPEG — A new chapter in family care is coming to Winnipeg with the redevelopment of a community centre into Manitoba’s first Indigenous-led family care centre.
The federal government announced a $4.2 million investment into the project on Monday.
Located in the Elmwood neighbourhood, the Larsen Family Care Centre will provide trauma-informed, culturally relevant resources and wrap-around support services to nurture children and families. The Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre, an Indigenous-led organization, is spearheading the initiative, backed by an additional $800,000 from the organization itself and $300,000 from the Manitoba government.

“Building on the heart work of the last 40 years, this initiative is a natural next step for the Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre to expand our services in the Elmwood community,” said Tammy Christensen, executive director of Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre.
“The Larsen care site will ensure families have access to necessary resources and wrap-around supports that will help keep our families together.”
Renovations will focus on retrofitting the existing building to expand its capacity and ensure it meets the needs of the families it serves.
