The Manitoba government is investing in the Selkirk Regional Health Centre to add 800 additional hip and knee surgeries annually.
The initiative, announced on Wednesday, aims to reduce surgical wait times across the province.
“This increased capacity is enhancing retention and recruitment of surgical specialists and goes a long way to change the surgical culture so we can tell surgeons that Manitoba is the place to be,” said Dr. Ed Buchel, provincial surgery specialty lead, Shared Health.
The Selkirk Regional Health Centre has also expanded care in the Interlake-Eastern region with a new 15-bed transitional care unit, 30 fully staffed medicine beds, and funding for seven-day-a-week patient discharges. Plans for expanded urgent care, including consultation on a new Eriksdale emergency room, are also underway.
“Cutting wait times for surgeries doesn’t have to be complicated. You don’t have to fly across an ocean to get good care, we just need more staff in Manitoba,” said Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care Minister Uzoma Asagwara.
