Winnipeg police officers on patrol spotted heavy smoke coming from a building in the 400 block of Burrows Avenue early Friday morning.
Officers quickly breached the entry door and evacuated a family of four — a couple and their two children — unaware of the danger in their basement suite. A store employee in the building was also rescued.
All occupants and responding officers were treated on-site for smoke inhalation but avoided serious injury. Fire crews controlled the blaze, and no further injuries were reported. The incident is under investigation.
