God’s Lake Narrows RCMP are investigating a fatal snowmobile accident that claimed the life of a 12-year-old girl last weekend.

Police responded to a report of a snowmobile collision near the community at around 8 p.m. on January 10. Officers located a trail believed to be the crash site, though neither the snowmobile nor its occupants were present.

Police learned a 12-year-old boy was operating the snowmobile with a 14-year-old male passenger while pulling a toboggan carrying three 12-year-olds. The incident occurred when the toboggan struck a tree stump on the path, throwing the young girl from the sled.

The child sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported by the snowmobile operator to the local nursing station, where she later died.

None of the children involved were wearing helmets, according to RCMP.

Police continue to investigate the collision.
