A three-vehicle collision on Wednesday near Portage la Prairie claimed the life of a 28-year-old woman and resulted in charges against a 24-year-old man.

The crash occurred on Highway 26 when a stolen westbound pickup truck crossed the centre line, forcing an eastbound pickup to swerve. The truck rolled into a ditch, and the evasive maneuver caused a collision with a westbound SUV.

The SUV driver, from High Bluff, was pronounced dead at the scene. The eastbound pickup driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the westbound pickup truck was able to free himself from his vehicle where he then was picked up by a passing motorist and dropped off at a nearby gas station. The pickup truck he was driving was later confirmed stolen out of Arborg.

The suspect, identified as James Lorne Hilton of St. Andrews, fled but was arrested near a Headingley motel. He faces multiple charges, including dangerous driving causing death and impaired driving.

RCMP continue to investigate.
