The Manitoba government’s new prompt payment regulation is now in effect, aiming to ensure faster and more reliable payments within the construction sector.
The regulation began April 1 and addresses long-standing concerns about delayed payments that often leave smaller contractors and suppliers financially vulnerable. The new rules apply to all levels of the construction payment chain — from owners to contractors, subcontractors, engineers, and material suppliers.
“These regulations make sure the local contractor at the end of the chain is protected, as they are often the one who are affected by delayed payments,” said Public Service Delivery Minister Mintu Sandhu.
The policy includes an adjudication framework and authority to resolve disputes quickly and sets out clear expectations for payment timelines and processes.
The Winnipeg Construction Association is applauding the regulation, saying the new system will help reduce financial risks for contractors and improve stability in the industry.
