The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service has issued an open-air fire ban across the city, effective from 6 p.m. on Monday, May 5, until 6 p.m. on Monday, May 19, 2025, due to heightened fire risk.
The ban prohibits open fires, backyard fire pits, fireworks, park fire pits, and the use of charcoal or wood-burning appliances, even for those with existing permits. All current permits are suspended, and no new permits will be issued during the ban period.
Propane and gas barbecues and fire tables are still allowed but must be used with caution.
Residents who violate the ban could face a $500 fine. To report restricted activities, contact 311. Fires should be reported immediately to 911.
The ban comes as Winnipeg fire crews responded to two grass fires on Sunday night — one in the 300 block of McPhillips Street and another in the green space behind Dakota Community Centre in St. Vital. Firefighters used specialized wildland firefighting equipment including the WFPS Bison and a water tanker to douse the flames. No injuries were reported.
North of the city, a state of emergency has been issued for areas in Pinaymootang and Peguis First Nations, as many homes in the communities have been destroyed by wildfires.
A fire ban is currently in effect for the city of Winnipeg. Outdoor fires are prohibited, including fire pits, open fires, and the use of fireworks. Find more information at https://t.co/evFEl2uOiD. pic.twitter.com/Y46ci89n5T
