The Winnipeg Sea Bears will retire Chad Posthumus’ No. 33 jersey during their 2025 home opener on May 16 to honour the late basketball star.
Posthumus, the team’s first-ever player signing and inaugural season captain, played a key role in leading the Sea Bears to the playoffs in 2023. Posthumus, 33, passed away late last year following complications from surgery after suffering a brain aneurysm.
The ceremony at Canada Life Centre will include raising his banner to the rafters. Additionally, Mayor Scott Gillingham will rename a stretch of Donald Street as “Chad Posthumus Way” in recognition of his community impact.
To further honour his legacy, Sea Bears players will wear “33 Forever” jersey patches throughout the 2025 season. Posthumus was recently awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal for his community work, which included youth outreach, diabetes advocacy, and support for local initiatives.
The jersey retirement will take place ahead of the team’s matchup against the Edmonton Stingers, with fans encouraged to arrive early for the tribute. Tickets are available through SeaBears.ca.
