WINNIPEG — A new type of pedestrian crossing has arrived in the city. Winnipeg’s first scramble intersection was activated Monday at King Street and Bannatyne Avenue.
The pilot project halts all vehicle traffic once per light cycle, allowing pedestrians to cross in any direction — though diagonal crossing is not yet included. City officials say the intersection was chosen for its high foot traffic and low vehicle volume, making it a strong candidate for testing the concept.
If the scramble proves successful, the city may consider upgrading the intersection to include diagonal crossings with new curb ramps and pedestrian signals.
During the scramble phase, an audible signal will announce: “Walk sign is on for all crossings.” Pedestrians can also cross in line with green lights during regular traffic flow. Drivers will not be permitted to turn during red lights.
The city will monitor the pilot to assess whether scramble crossings are suitable for other locations in Winnipeg.
