The Manitoba government is expanding medical training in the Westman region by adding 10 new doctor training seats in Brandon.
Premier Wab Kinew announced the initiative on Wednesday in Brandon, including upgrading local education and health facilities in the Manitoba city.
Kinew says the total number of medical training spots in Brandon will rise to 20 through a partnership with the University of Manitoba’s Max Rady College of Medicine. Students will train locally at the Brandon Regional Health Centre.
The province is also investing in major upgrades to Brandon University’s Brodie Science Centre to support science education and future pathways to medicine, as well as renovating the Brandon Regional Health Centre library to create dedicated space for medical students.
“This is an exciting commitment to Brandon families and the Westman region,” said Brandon Mayor Jeff Fawcett.
“The combination of these additional training seats and new science labs will attract our homegrown talent, get them working in Westman settings and lead to more physicians starting a practice right here at home.”
