(CITY OF WINNIPEG / HANDOUT)
The City of Winnipeg is installing temporary traffic calming curbs in several neighbourhoods next month to improve safety and reduce speeding.
The pre-made yellow concrete curbs, marked with signage and poly posts, are designed to minimize conflict between vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. Officials say the initiative is a cost-effective way to reduce road risks until permanent upgrades can be made during future street renewals.
“Every neighbourhood in our city deserves safer streets,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “That’s why we created a new road safety unit, to find practical, cost-effective ways to reduce risk and protect all road users. These traffic calming curbs are a smart solution that will make a difference right away.”
Crews will begin installations in August at locations identified for high speeds, wide intersections, and poor visibility at crosswalks. The city will also partner with Art City Inc. to add asphalt art to increase visibility and enhance neighbourhood aesthetics.
The city says the one-year pilot will be monitored for effectiveness and adjusted as needed.
