An 18-year-old Winnipeg woman is facing multiple drug charges after Canada Border Services Agency officers at Calgary International Airport intercepted her luggage containing approximately 30 kilograms of methamphetamine.
The drugs were discovered on June 23 during routine outbound screening of luggage destined for Narita, Japan. CBSA officers arrested the traveller, Mariane Lee, on board her departing flight without incident.
The Integrated Border Enforcement Team (IBET), which includes the RCMP, CBSA and Calgary Police Service, launched a criminal investigation following the seizure.
“This seizure demonstrates the dedication and expertise of CBSA’s border services officers as they work to prevent illegal drugs from breaching our borders,” said Janalee Bell-Boychuk, regional director general, Prairie Region, Canada Border Services Agency.
Lee is charged with possession for the purpose of exporting, possession for the purpose of trafficking, and attempting to export controlled goods. She was scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Calgary on Monday.
