A packed crowd and record-setting wagering made for a thrilling night at Assiniboia Downs on Monday during the 77th running of the $125,000 Manitoba Derby.
The main event saw #4 Attack named the winner after #7 Take Charge Tom was disqualified for interference. Attack, trained by Craig Robert Smith and ridden by N’Rico Prescod, paid $14.50 to win.
Wagering on the Derby alone reached $323,267, while total handle for the seven-race card surpassed $3.97 million, the highest Derby-day total in track history and second overall.
Much of the action came from the ASD Jackpot Pick 5, where a $465,000 carryover drew more than $2 million in new bets. A winning 20-cent ticket paid $2,469.46.
Other highlights included #8 Bling Dancer winning the $50,000 Escape Clause Stakes and #3 Judo taking the $50,000 Harvey Warner Manitoba Mile.
“The atmosphere tonight was electric,” said ASD CEO Darren Dunn. “To see record wagering, a packed house, and a beautiful summer evening for racing — it was the kind of night that showcases everything great about this sport and this racetrack. We are so grateful to our fans, horsepeople, and staff who helped make this a truly historic Manitoba Derby.”
Live racing continues Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with select Mondays through the rest of the 2025 season.
