Delegates from Manitoba’s 10 cities gathered in Steinbach on Wednesday for the Association of Manitoba Municipalities (AMM) Cities Caucus.
Public safety and bail reform emerged as key issues, with municipal leaders urging Ottawa to strengthen measures against repeat and prolific offenders.
“Public safety is a fundamental concern for all municipalities, and our residents expect meaningful action to address the impacts of repeat offenders,” said Portage la Prairie Mayor Sharilyn Knox, chair of the caucus.
“These reforms are necessary to hold offenders accountable and to improve community safety in every corner of Manitoba.”
AMM president Kathy Valentino added that municipalities are facing increasing pressures, from tariffs to wildfires, and called for a modernized federal-provincial-municipal relationship.
The meeting, which was held at Steinbach’s new Southeast Event Centre, comes ahead of the AMM Fall Convention in November.
