Traffic will once again be moving across Winnipeg’s Louise Bridge beginning Friday after the city completed repair work ahead of schedule.
The bridge was closed May 23 for annual inspection and maintenance, which revealed corrosion and other defects requiring extended repairs. The closure was originally set to last until mid-September but crews finished the work with more than three weeks to spare.
“Thank you to Winnipeggers for their patience while this important work was completed,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham, in a release.
“I’m pleased that crews were able to finish repairs ahead of schedule so the Louise Bridge can reopen safely for both vehicles and pedestrians.”
While the latest repairs are complete, city staff continue developing a $40-million rehabilitation plan that could extend the bridge’s lifespan by up to 40 years. Work could begin as early as 2026, pending budget approval.
Meanwhile, the city is moving forward with plans to demolish the Arlington Bridge, which was closed unexpectedly in 2023. Council has allocated $17 million for demolition and $5 million for design work on a replacement.
Crews were able to finish repairs ahead of schedule so the Louise Bridge can reopen on Friday morning.
