Manitoba RCMP say one woman is dead and seven others were injured after a series of stabbings in Hollow Water First Nation early Thursday morning.
Police were first alerted to an assault around 3:45 a.m., followed by reports of a stabbing just before 6 a.m. Officers responding to the community found multiple victims at two separate locations, ranging in age from 18 to 60. An 18-year-old woman later died from her injuries.
The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Tyrone Simard of Hollow Water, fled in a stolen vehicle. Around 6:53 a.m., the vehicle collided with an RCMP cruiser on Provincial Road 304 near Black River First Nation. Simard died at the scene, while the female officer driving the cruiser was taken to hospital with critical but non-life-threatening injuries.
“She stopped a man on a rampage, so on behalf of the province of Manitoba I thank her,” said Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew.
Provincial Road 304 was closed in both directions south of Black River First Nation as RCMP investigated, but has since reopened.
The other victims, some in critical condition, were taken to hospital via helicopter and ground ambulance. The Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, the province’s largest hospital, declared a code orange — a move used when a sudden and large influx of patients is expected.
Speaking to reporters outside the hospital, Christy Williams said her father, Michael Raven, was one of the injured.
She said there had been a dispute with the suspect. Her father then went to bed and was sleeping when he was stabbed several times, she added.
