The province has signed its first Manitoba Jobs Agreement with Manitoba Building Trades to create local construction jobs through the building of four new schools, Premier Wab Kinew announced on Tuesday.
The MJA ensures contractors prioritize Manitoba workers, sets standards for wages and benefits, and includes apprenticeship targets to support workforce development.
It applies to all contractors and workers involved in projects funded by the provincial government worth $50 million or more.
“Manitoba workers are the driving force of our economy,” said Kinew. “We’re creating Manitoba jobs for Manitobans, by making sure that our province is built with good, family-supporting jobs in the trades. This starts with putting Manitobans to work to build four new schools to the highest standards for our kids.”
The four new schools will serve kindergarten to Grade 8 students, with two in Winnipeg (Devonshire Park and Prairie Pointe), one in West St. Paul’s Meadowlands, and one in southwest Brandon.
