Winnipeg police arrested two men in separate incidents Wednesday at the Unicity Transit Hub in the 3600 block of Portage Avenue.

Officers stopped a man trying to board a bus with alleged stolen goods from a nearby store just before 9 a.m. Maverick Donald Harper, 37, was charged with theft under $5,000 and remains in custody.

A few hours later, just after noon, a bus driver reported a man smashing a window with his elbow. Officers arrested Andrew Mark Nabess, 35, who police said was also carrying a flammable liquid and lighter in violation of a release order. He faces charges of mischief under $5,000 and failing to comply with release conditions.

Police say the arrests occurred on the launch day of the new Winnipeg Transit violent crime intervention strategy, which is aimed at curbing violence and disruptive behaviour on Winnipeg buses.
