A new city basketball court has been dedicated in honour of the late Chad Posthumus, the first signed player and captain of the Winnipeg Sea Bears.
The city, province, Sea Bears organization, and the Posthumus family gathered Friday to dedicate the new basketball court at Gateway Recreation Centre in his honour.
The Chad Posthumus Memorial Court is part of a $569,000 improvement project at the recreation centre, which also includes new pickleball courts, paved walkways, bike racks, seating areas, fencing, landscaping, and improved drainage.
“Chad embodied everything the Sea Bears and the city of Winnipeg stand for, hard work, humility, and heart,” said Sea Bears’ owner David Asper.
“Naming this community court in his honour ensures that his legacy continues to inspire young athletes for generations to come. Chad was more than a talented player; he was a leader, a teammate, and a proud Winnipegger whose impact will be felt well beyond the game.”
Posthumus passed away last November following complications from surgery after suffering a brain aneurysm. He was 33.
Funding for the project came in the form of $437,000 from the city and $132,000 from the province.
