The Manitoba government has released more details about a planned overpass at an intersection west of Winnipeg where 17 people died in 2023.
The province first revealed plans to build an overpass at Highway 1 and Highway 5 near Carberry in its throne speech earlier this week.
“Safety is about more than engineering, it’s about trust,” said Premier Wab Kinew. “The people of Carberry spoke clearly and we adjusted course. With renewed design work and real community input, we are moving toward a safe solution. An overpass will protect lives and reflects our belief that every Manitoban deserves to feel safe on our roads.”
Kinew says the decision follows public consultations, a safety review and technical analysis.
Carberry Mayor Ray Muirhead says the community is “thrilled” the province is moving ahead, adding the project honours those who lost their lives.
The province will now move into land acquisition, environmental approvals and utility work. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027 and is expected to take about two and a half years.
